Lac de Sainte-Croix

Created in the 1970s, Lac de Sainte-Croix is the third-largest lake in France and arguably its most beautiful. Surrounded by lavender fields and rugged limestone cliffs, its emerald-to-turquoise waters remain calm year-round, as motorboats are prohibited—making it a haven for swimmers and paddle-boarders.

What to do:

  • The Gorges Entry: Rent a kayak or electric boat from the Galetas Bridge to journey directly into the mouth of the Gorges du Verdon.

  • Beaches & Coves: Explore the sandy shores near the villages of Bauduen or Les Salles-sur-Verdon for family-friendly swimming.

  • Scenic Drives: Take the 60km loop around the lake for panoramic viewpoints, passing through the hillside village of Sainte-Croix-du-Verdon.

  • Local Culture: Visit nearby Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, officially one of the most beautiful villages in France, famous for its ceramics and its "star" hanging between the cliffs.
