Gorges Du Verdon

Carved over millennia by the Verdon River, this 25km-long canyon is a dramatic border between the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and the Var. The unique emerald color of the water—caused by glacial minerals and algae—contrasts sharply against the white limestone walls, creating one of the most photographed landscapes in France.

Ways to Experience the Gorge:

  • The Scenic Drive: Follow the Route des Crêtes (D23). This circular loop features 15 world-class viewpoints (Belvédères), where you can often spot wild griffon vultures soaring on the thermal currents.

  • The Iconic Hike: The Sentier Blanc-Martel is the most famous trail in the region. It takes you right into the heart of the canyon floor (approx. 6–7 hours), including passages through tunnels and steep ladders.

  • Point Sublime: For those who want the view without the hike, this is the most famous and accessible lookout, offering a panoramic "v-shaped" perspective of the canyon’s depth.

  • The Water Gate: At the Pont du Galetas, the canyon meets the lake. This is the spot to rent an electric boat or kayak to paddle upstream between the towering cliffs.

Pro-Tip: If you’re driving the loops, go counter-clockwise. This puts the driver on the mountainside rather than the cliffside, which is much more comfortable for those with a fear of heights!
